The Japanese Church of Christ is actively involved in many community activities promoting our Japanese heritage and culture as well as sharing in Christian fellowship. Please join in any or all of the activities; your presence is always needed and welcomed!
Nihon Matsuri
Nihon Matsuri (Japan Festival) is held the last Saturday in April and is free to the public. This street festival involves the Japanese community groups in Salt Lake City showcasing the culture and heritage of Japan. Japantown (100 South) is blocked off between 2nd and 3rd West and features stages on both ends with entertainment including martial arts, taiko, dance, and a kimono fashion show.
As a fundraising effort, the JCC participates in a food booth, traditionally selling sushi and manju and the youth group sells rice balls and other food items. Food preparation occurs the week and day before and help is always needed. (more...)
Aki Matsuri
Aki Matsuri (Japanese Fall Festival) is generally held during the last Saturday of August. Food, entertainment, cultural displays and handicrafts are featured and the entire congregation becomes involved – family and friends – whether involved in set up, cooking, serving, or participating in the entertainment program. Nikkei Senior Center Luncheon
Each February, the Agape Women’s group hosts a luncheon for the Nikkei Senior Center, an organization of volunteers working together with local Japanese-American community sponsors to provide a monthly luncheon and program for those 65 years and older. (more...)
Mochi Making
During the month of December, church members take part in “mochi-tsuki,” or making mochi (steamed rice cakes) for Oshogatsu (New Year’s) celebration. (more...)
St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen
Service to St. Vincent de Paul’s Soup Kitchen occurs on one Tuesday of each month. Our JCC volunteers help serve a hot meal to those in need. If you would like to volunteer for this activity, please contact the Pastor or leave a message at the church office. (more...)
Kenshin Taiko
The Kenshin Taiko group performs for various community events, including Nihon Matsuri, Aki Matsuri, Living Traditions, Asian Festival, Salt Lake Multicultural Festival and others; as well as private celebrations and school functions. Athletic Teams
The JCC participates in a softball league during the summer months and a basketball league during the winter months, joining in fellowship with other churches across the Salt Lake Valley. Whether a participant or a fan, come support the team. Our loyal fan base is said to be the largest at all of the games! (more...)
