In October of 1918, the Salt Lake Japanese Christian Church began ministry in the heart of Japantown, located on 135 South 100 West. It was commissioned with the task of evangelizing the Japanese-speaking population of the entire Intermountain region. As the pastor traveled to mining and railroad camps throughout Utah, the membership increased dramatically. Six years later in 1924, the church erected a formal chapel at its present location at 268 West 100 South, thanks to the financial assistance of local businesses, churches, and national associations.

Since then, the Lord helped JCC meet the growing needs of its people. In 1952, the Oriental Festival debuted to great appeal as a fundraiser and as a cultural display. At the same time, the church school reached its zenith with over 180 children and youth. A very active Young Adults group was launched and attracted many who would otherwise never have met Christ.

To meet the needs of the young sansei generation, a new Christian education building was constructed in 1962, equipped with a fellowship hall and multiple classrooms. In the 1980s, the Ed Building required reconstruction and expansion after an arsonist had set it on fire. In the 1990s, JCC carried on the remodeling project into other areas of the church including the Issei Lounge, new pulpit and pipe organ, kitchen, and the Cascade parking lot.

In the course of its existence, JCC has worked for the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. Through joys and adversities, His Spirit has nurtured and strengthened the congregation.
